While steam shows I only have 7 hours of playtime, I have actually owned a disc copy of this game for years and have played it frequently, it remains my favourite RTS to this day. The campaign also has a great storyline and slowly eases you into the different levels of units and the different areas of combat.Įach faction has it's own unique advantages and disadvantages which makes fighting them interesting and the unique aesthetics of each faction helps give them an identity.

Supreme Commander even uses a full ballistics simulation rather than dice rolls for combat which leads to all sorts of interesting strategies using terrain and adds a sense of realism.īuilding air, land, and sea units allows for really interesting and unique opportunities for combined arms, and different ways you can exploit an opposing players weakness. Just take a look at the customer review. This is quite possibly one of the greatest RTS games ever made, it has an amazing sense of scale, the smallest units are tanks, you can zoom out all the way to view the map all at once with symbols showing unit types (if you have multiple monitors you can actually set a second monitor to always have this tactical view on). One of the thing I find that is fascinated by this game is the tech-tree technology in this game are all plausible/has achieved in real world. The story of this game is like the combination work of Stanley Kubrick and Isaac Asimov that will draws you into the game. There are 7 factions, each faction follows a distinct philosophical belief, such as technological utopianism, environmentalism, capitalism, militarism, anti-authoritarianism, piracy, and classic liberalism. Alien Crossfire introduces two non-human factions as well as additional technologies, facilities, secret projects, native life, unit abilities and victory condition. Alpha Centauri features improvements on the Civilization II's game engine, including simultaneous multiplay, social engineering, climate, customizable units, alien native life, additional diplomatic and spy options, additional ways to win, and greater mod-ability.

As the game progresses, Planet's growing sentience becomes a formidable obstacle to the human colonists. Set in the 22nd century, the game begins as seven competing ideological factions land on the planet Chiron ("Planet") in the Alpha Centauri star system. Some of mods for Civ 4 are also damn good and Civ5 is coming out later this month. Total war is more on the arcadey style, which is good to relax and co but I wouldnt call them "extreme" really, AI in single player is just not great enough to put your brain through grinder after few games.īut some mods on Medieval 2 or Rome are amazing and can totally change the gameĬivilization is very good also if you like the style, I would put it in something in between Total War and Heart of Iron/Europa, there is lots of depth in Civ but without the whole "number management" of the HoI/Europa which sometimes. If you want some huge simulation like game with lots of parameters to handle and more real strategy, go for Heart of Iron or Europa.

Hearts of Iron and Europa Universalis are a bit of a category on one side, Total War is on another side while Civ are again another genre.

Really depends what kind of games you are into also, because the games you name are all very different from each other
